Bradleygrant@rogers.com

Dear MindShare Community Member,

Happy Wednesday! AI in Canadian education continues to move quickly from experimentation to real system-wide impact, with a strong focus on balancing innovation, ethics, and student wellbeing. I'm pleased to share a national lens from coast to coast and the interior of Canada too, having just returned from Manitoba and Alberta.

This past week, I was honoured to attend UpperBound26 in Edmonton with over 10,000 participants, where AI Minister Evan Solomon reinforced the “AI for All” vision, ensuring that frontier innovation is paired with trust, inclusion, and practical classroom application. That message is now showing up across Canada as leaders turn ideas into action. Be sure to tune into my media scrum podcast where I challenged Minister Solomon on addressing the skills gap facing K12 to Post-secondary. His response might surprise you!

K-12 Top News Stories
1. Ontario Investing $1.6 Billion to Build and Expand Schools Across Ontario
Ontario Government | April 28, 2026
The Ontario government is investing $1.6 billion to build and expand 79 school construction projects across the province to support rapidly growing communities. This provincial funding will create over 29,000 new student spaces and more than 1,900 licensed child care spaces to provide modern classrooms that prepare students for stable, in-demand careers. A significant portion of this initiative will allocate $285 million specifically to the London region to develop seven new schools and two facility expansions. Furthermore, the newly introduced Putting Student Achievement First Act will implement enhanced oversight and strict accountability measures to ensure these capital infrastructure projects are delivered on schedule.

2. What YCDSB’s Strong EQAO Math Results Reveal About Improving Student Outcomes

Nelson | May 14, 2026

The York Catholic District School Board achieved mathematics results above the provincial average following a three-year efficacy study of the My Math Path resource. This implementation significantly boosted teacher confidence in lesson preparation and enhanced student engagement, understanding, and risk-taking in mathematics. Data from the multi-year study indicates that regular daily usage of both the student materials and the digital teaching platform established a highly consistent instructional foundation across classrooms. Furthermore, participating students demonstrated stronger academic persistence, greater confidence, and higher enjoyment of the subject compared to their peers across the province.

3. New CEO Named at Toronto District School Board

TDSB | May 14, 2026

The Toronto District School Board has officially appointed Camillo Cipriano as its new Chief Executive Officer, with his tenure scheduled to begin on June 8, 2026. Bringing nearly 30 years of experience in public education, Cipriano transitions to the role from the Niagara Catholic District School Board, where he successfully eliminated budget deficits and improved student performance metrics. Concurrently, Stacey Zucker will transition from her role as Interim Director of Education to become the board's new Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operations Officer. This executive leadership restructuring aims to strengthen organizational improvement, financial sustainability, and long-term academic success across the school board.

4. Province plans to have AI curriculum for N.B. schools this fall, but opposition has concerns
CBC | May 14, 2026

The New Brunswick government plans to introduce an artificial intelligence curriculum for kindergarten through Grade 12 in anglophone schools this upcoming September. This framework aims to establish essential guardrails for ethical tool usage while leveraging technology to help older students identify learning patterns in reading, writing, and mathematics. However, political opposition members express strong concerns regarding the experimental nature of the technology, arguing that utilizing automated tools for basic tasks could hinder the independent cognitive development of younger children. In response to these concerns, education officials clarify that early grade levels will focus strictly on technology awareness, building upon existing risk-assessed district guidelines that keep teachers at the center of interactive classroom tool integration.

5. Google I/O 2026: Three Shifts Every Educator Should Build For This Year

Training Sites | May 19, 2026

Google’s recent I/O 2026 keynote showcased three structural shifts in artificial intelligence that will fundamentally transform the educational, consulting, and coaching industries over the next year. First, voice technology is replacing traditional keyboards as the primary software interface, shifting student learning needs from software navigation to clear verbal communication. Second, the true competitive advantage has shifted from generic models to personal context, rendering an individual’s accumulated career data and documented frameworks their most valuable asset. Finally, sophisticated prompt engineering has become obsolete as advanced models process stream-of-consciousness inputs, making precise decision-making and clarity of intent the critical bottlenecks to successful outputs.

This collaborative approach accelerates the commercialization of homegrown discoveries while expanding domestic innovation capacity and securing Canadian intellectual property.

7. Amii Fuels Canada’s AI Momentum as Upper Bound Opens with 53% Growth and 11,000 Global Attendees

Global Newswire | May 19, 2026

Canadian K-12 classrooms have emerged as the primary front lines of artificial intelligence adoption, with roughly three-quarters of students utilizing generative AI tools for schoolwork. While these emerging technologies offer immense potential for personalized tutoring and administrative relief, their widespread integration has deeply disrupted traditional teaching practices and introduced student safety concerns. To properly navigate this transition, a comprehensive national educational strategy must deliberately build technical AI literacy while heavily reinforcing uniquely human soft skills like communication and critical thinking. Consequently, embedding responsible AI governance, teacher training, and strict youth privacy protections directly into Canada's upcoming national policy is essential to shield and equip future generations.

8. Simulation technology donation supports Ontario Tech students in emerging health-care roles
Ontario Tech U | May 13, 2026
Ontario Tech University has received a high-fidelity simulation mannequin donation from Laerdal Medical Canada to enhance experiential and work-integrated learning for health sciences students. This advanced technology supports the training of specialized, non-clinical simulation operations specialists to design and run realistic clinical environments at scale. By preparing these technical specialists, the initiative expands training capacity across Canada's healthcare system and allows frontline clinicians to focus primarily on patient care. Furthermore, the partnership includes guest lectures, technical workshops, and experiential learning opportunities directly with Laerdal Medical to boost student career readiness.

9. Brock experts call for more tech education as provinces eye cellphone, social media bans in schools

 Brock U | April 30, 2026

The provincial push to ban cellphones and social media in Canadian schools risks leaving students unprepared for the digital world unless paired with robust digital literacy education. Simply prohibiting personal devices without an instructional strategy fails to teach critical skills like online safety, digital citizenship, and artificial intelligence literacy. Additionally, sweeping device bans can worsen the digital divide for under-resourced schools and underserved communities that heavily rely on personal phones for learning and essential connectivity. Combining distinct technologies like social media and AI into a single restrictive policy further creates inconsistent messaging that can lead to both under-regulation and over-restriction in the classroom.

10. Agents, robots, and us: How AI reshapes work and skills in Europe

McKinsey Global Institute | May 12, 2026

European work hours could theoretically face up to 58% automation using existing technologies, a shift that could unlock $1.9 trillion in economic value by 2030 depending heavily on the speed of corporate adoption. Rather than triggering widespread job losses, roughly 75% of current workforce skills will likely be applied in tandem with these emerging intelligent systems. Demand for AI fluency is outpacing technical development roles, having grown fivefold since 2023 to appear across occupations representing 5% of total employment. Capturing this immense value will ultimately require organizations to comprehensively redesign legacy workflows and invest deeply in supporting employee adaptation to hybrid human-machine roles.
