Brave New Words: How AI Will Revolutionize Education (and Why That's a Good Thing)
" Whether we like it or not, the AI revolution is coming to education. In Brave New Words, Salman Khan, the visionary behind Khan Academy, explores how artificial intelligence and GPT technology will transform learning, and offers a road map for teachers, parents, and students to navigate this exciting (and sometimes intimidating) new world.

A pioneer in the field of education technology, Khan examines the ins and outs of these cutting-edge tools and how they will revolutionize the way we learn and teach. For parents concerned about their children’s success, Khan illustrates how AI can personalize learning by adapting to each student’s individual pace and style, identifying strengths and areas for improvement, and offering tailored support and feedback to complement traditional classroom instruction. Khan emphasizes that embracing AI in education is not about replacing human interaction but enhancing it with customized and accessible learning tools that encourage creative problem-solving skills and prepare students for an increasingly digital world."

K-12 Top News Stories
1. The edtech blind spot: Investing in learning technologies, not just teaching
thttps://www.ecampusnews.com/ | December 5, 2025
A commentary in eCampus News argues that higher education has long invested in teaching-focused technology, but has neglected tools that help students actually learn. The author says edtech should target learning-centered outcomes, removing “unproductive friction” (language barriers, note-taking bottlenecks, admin tasks) while preserving “productive friction,” which is the mental effort required for real learning. With 22.3% of first-year students dropping out, institutions must invest in tools backed by evidence, such as AI-assisted note-taking, translation, and personalized quizzes, without automating the thinking itself. The article urges universities to evaluate solutions based on how they improve learning, retention, and student success, not just because they are new or innovative.
2. Expert warns of ‘unintended consequences’ if Canada implements youth social media ban
https://www.ctvnews.ca/ | December 10, 2025
Australia has enacted a new law banning social media access for users under 16, requiring platforms to delete existing youth accounts and prevent new ones. Experts warn Canada should not rush to adopt similar restrictions, as banning social media could push teens to less-regulated platforms like Discord or private messaging, where risks such as cyberbullying may persist or worsen. Matt Hatfield from OpenMedia argues the policy could create unintended harm, including youth hiding online activity and avoiding seeking help when problems occur. Instead of a blanket ban, he suggests Canada focus on platform-level safety measures, algorithm protections, and gradual regulation, waiting to assess outcomes in Australia before acting.
3. Six new school projects announced in largest education budget of $242.7 million to date in New Brunswick
https://www.gnb.ca/en.html | December 3, 2025
New Brunswick announced its largest education capital budget ever, $242.7 million for 2026-27, to improve school infrastructure, address aging buildings, and support growing student needs. The plan funds six major school projects, including several new K-8 schools and mid-life upgrades to schools in Dieppe, Five Rivers, and Fredericton, as well as a new francophone school in Woodstock to protect minority language education rights. Most of the budget is dedicated to ongoing construction, repairs, modular classrooms, equipment, and safety programs such as dust collection upgrades. A long-term priority list was also released, outlining future new builds and upgrades to help districts plan without reapplying yearly.

4. Accessible and Equitable Artificial Intelligence Systems

https://accessible.canada.ca/ | December 3, 2025

Canada has released CAN-ASC-6.2:2025, the country’s first accessibility standard focused specifically on accessible and equitable artificial intelligence systems. The standard outlines requirements that ensure AI is usable, fair, safe and transparent for people with disabilities, with expectations for organizations to involve disabled individuals in design, development, testing, data decisions, deployment, and ongoing evaluation. It mandates accessible alternatives to AI, clear communication, consent controls, harm monitoring, staff training, disability-inclusive governance, and equitable data practices. Organizations using or procuring AI must continuously review systems for risks, allow human option pathways, support feedback processes, and prioritize accessibility from planning through implementation and long-term management.

5. Pascal Siakam Isn’t Just Winning Games, He’s Building the Future With Second Cohort of His EdTech Engine
https://brandongonezshow.com/ | November 26, 2025

NBA star Pascal Siakam has launched the second cohort of his EdTech Engine program, run through TMU’s DMZ and focused more heavily on AI-driven learning tools and youth upskilling. The initiative, run through the PS43 Foundation, aims to equip young people with future-ready skills and support start-ups that advance education technology beyond traditional models. Siakam emphasizes impact over visibility, highlighting success stories from the first cohort such as Cyber Legends and English Islands, while reaffirming his commitment to youth in Indiana, Toronto, and Cameroon. He also teased upcoming international projects, expressing excitement about expanding opportunities for the next generation.

6. Canada launches $1.7bn fund to poach academic talent from US

https://www.ft.com/ | December 9, 2025

Canada has announced a C$1.7bn initiative to attract up to 1,000 top global and US-based researchers, responding to the wave of American academics looking abroad amid funding cuts and political pressure under the Trump administration. The program allocates major investments into recruiting senior researchers, supporting doctoral and postdoctoral talent, and expanding research infrastructure across the country. Canadian officials argue the initiative strengthens national innovation capacity, positioning Canada as a stable alternative for academics facing constraints elsewhere. Universities are already preparing recruitment lists, and early examples show several prominent US scholars relocating, reflecting a broader global competition for scientific talent.

7. SFU’s WearTech Labs celebrates grand opening at Surrey campus

https://www.sfu.ca/sfunews.html | December 9, 2025

Beginning in Fall 2026, the Hub will offer new undergraduate and graduate programs in Engineering and Computer Science, supported by co-op and hands-on industry opportunities. The facility is designed to give students career-ready skills through smaller class sizes, strong employer partnerships, and modern collaborative workspaces. Lakehead emphasizes that the Hub will help students turn “big ideas into thriving STEM careers,” with virtual sessions available for prospective international students.

9. Sparks fly as Brock launches $100M sustainability initiative

https://brocku.ca/  | November 26, 2025

Brock University has launched SPARK, a more than $100-million sustainability initiative that will modernize campus infrastructure and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 83% by 2028, exceeding previous climate targets. The three-year program, created in partnership with the Canadian Infrastructure Bank (CIB) and Enbridge Sustain, will upgrade core systems such as lighting, heating, ventilation, automation controls, and energy-efficient equipment across campus. SPARK will also reduce energy use by 60% and cut Brock’s long-term deferred maintenance costs by over $225 million while turning the campus into a “living lab” for student learning and research on sustainability. University leaders and government partners describe the initiative as a national model for deep energy retrofits and a major step in positioning Brock as a leader in climate action.

10. Launch of new Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards

https://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/ | December 9, 2025

The Government of Canada has launched the Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards, investing $133.6 million over three years to recruit top international doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. Administered by CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC, the program will fund 600 doctoral scholarships ($40,000/year for 3 years) and 400 postdoctoral awards ($70,000/year for 2 years) across eight strategic research areas, including AI, biotechnology, clean tech, climate resilience, and advanced materials.
